EXCERPT:
An Amazon executive has released a statement about the massive budget for their new Lord of the Rings series. Recent reports had the company paying around $465 million for the first season, which is more than Peter Jackson’s entire Lord of the Rings trilogy back in the early 2000s. It may have been 20 years since those movies came out, but it is still a large price tag for a television series.
The show was developed for Amazon Prime by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who will also be serving as showrunners. Amazon Studios is producing with a unique cooperative relationship with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, New Line Cinema (the studio behind Jackson’s trilogy), and HarperCollins. At the moment only 2 seasons have been officially ordered by Amazon, though 5 seasons were discussed when the deal was initially made.
